MYSTIC- Janet (Burrows) Godwin, 58, of 100 Edgecomb Street, Mystic died Friday at Hospice in Branford after a battle with cancer.Janet was born Janet Elizabeth Burrows on December 4, 1943 in Enw London to Ambrose H. and Nancy Scholfield Burrows of Essex. As a youth, Mrs. Godwin lived in Guilford, New Haven, Newburyport, MA and Kennebunkport ME and South Freeport ME. As an adult she returned to Mystic and married to Deryll H. Godwin.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Godwin was an avid reader with an intense interest in history. She graduated from Bradford Jr. College in 1964 and later received a B.A. in History from the University of Maine in 1968. In 1990, she received a Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.
Over the course of her life, she held several positions at the mystic Seaport in both the education and development departments. She also worked at the Groton Public Library and was most recently employed as the archivist at the Mystic River Historical Society.
Descended from some of Mystic's earliest settlers and sea-faring families, Janet took an active role in preserving local history. She was a member of the Mystic Seaport, the Mystic River Historical Society, the Denison Society, the Jabez Smith House Committee, and the Friends of the Mystic & Noank Library where she and her husband oragnzed the Library Fair.
Besides her husband and parents, Janet leaves her son, Ambrose M. Godwin of Mystic and 8 cats. She was predeceased by her brother, Albert C. Burrows who died June 5, 2000.The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic, on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm. A Funeral service will be conducted at the Noank Baptist Church on Thursday at 2:30pm. The family requests donations to the CT Humane Society, Mystic & Noank Library, the Mystic Seaport, the Denison Society, Mystic River Historical Society, and the Jabez Smith House.
