Doris Campbell Safford

SACO- Doris C. Safford, known all her life as Dody, died on August 23, in Scarborough, Maine, after a brave fight against heart disease. She was ninety-three and a resident of the Inn at Atlantic Heights, Saco.

Dody was born on June 15, 1922, in Rochester, New York, to Donald A. Campbell and Edith van Santvoord Campbell. She lived in several towns, including Buffalo, New York, Bennington, Vermont, and Toronto, Canada, and attended schools in both the United States and Canada. She began her college education at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, and served as a WAVE in the medical corps during World War II. After the war, she attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. In August 1947, Dody married Theodore R. Safford of Williamstown, Mass.

Dody had several careers, among others as a copywriter for radio, a teacher’s aide, and an antique dealer. After retirement, she stayed active as a painter and a volunteer at local animal shelters.

Her husband predeceased her. She is survived by her brother, Duncan A. Campbell, \Bennington, Vermont; her daughter, Leslie A. Safford, Waltham, Mass., her son, Charles D. Safford, and her daughter-in-law, Amy Schimler Safford, Roswell, Georgia; her grandson, Zachary Schimler Safford, New York, New York; and numerous nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. The family will hold a private ceremony.

Dody’s final wishes were for donations, in lieu of flowers, to be made in her memory to the place where she spent her last, peaceful hours: Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, Maine.
