Roger M. Benoit, 77, was called safely home on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, after a brief illness. Born in Chicopee on June 1, in the midst of the Great Flood of 1938, to the late Maurice and Florence (Audette) Benoit. He attended Chicopee schools before joining the Navy, proudly serving his country honorably from 1956 to 1960. Upon his discharge, he met and married Diane K. Benoit, who predeceased him in 2009. He is survived by a brother, Robert John, and his significant other Olive Ylin, of Wolcott, Vermont, and was predeceased by a brother, Louis, and a sister, Irene. Roger and Diane raised three children, Michael F., Roger M., Jr. (Benji) and Dawn M. all of Chicopee. He also leaves three grandchildren, Jordan, Blake and Sydney. Roger and Diane owned and operated the Dugout Cafe since 1976, serving their customers for 39 years. Roger loved watching his beloved Red Sox and New England Patriots, as well as enjoying all types of music, including his favorites, Andrea Bocelli and Bruce Springsteen. Above all, Roger will be remembered for his one-liners and quick wit. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Baystate Medical Center, with special thanks to Dr. Ronald Gross, for their care, comfort and compassion during this difficult time. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday August 13, 2015 at 11 AM at the Grise Funeral Home 280 Springfield St. Chicopee. Burial will follow in St Stanislaus Cemetery. Calling Hours will be held on the morning of the funeral from 9:00 to 11:00 AM.
