Obituary

Joseph J. Monteiro, 90, of Dartmouth died August 15, 2015 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital.
He was the husband of Angelina G. (Gomes) Monteiro.
Born in Providence, RI, the son of the late Joao D. and Maria J. (Silva) Monteiro, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth most of his life.
Mr. Monteiro was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was formerly employed by States Nightwear and Eastern Sportswear for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Monteiro was a member of the OLOA Seniors Club, an officer at the OLOA Credit Union and a counselor at the Inter-Church Council Greater New Bedford.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Monteiro participated in the battles of the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign ribbon and the World War II Victory medal.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Steven Monteiro and his wife Maura of Worthington, MA, Jerome Monteiro and his wife Elaine of San Antonio, TX and John Monteiro and his companion Christine Sylvia of New Bedford; 6 daughters, Donna Allen and her husband Anthony of Boston, Kaye Washington and her husband Thaddeus of Goldsboro, NC, Jo-Ann Monteiro of Dartmouth, Angela Millwood and her husband Calvin of Philadelphia, PA, Josephine Monteiro of Dartmouth and Christine LeBlanc and her husband Jerry of New Bedford; a son-in-law, Michael Young of Newport News, VA; a sister, Justina "Tina" Teixeira and her husband Joel of Dartmouth; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Beatrice Young and the brother of the late Peter Monteiro and Virginia Almeida.
His Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 19th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, August 18th from 4-8 PM.
