NORTH DIGHTON - Arthur P. “Lefty” Costa, husband of Elinor F. (Reid) Bond Costa of North Dighton, died at Marian Manor on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015.
He was 94.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Manuel and Rose (Butler) Costa.
Educated in Taunton schools, he later served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
In his younger years, he worked for many shoe factories as a technician.
Later, he worked as plant manager for Princess House and Sovereign House, retiring in 1985.
An avid sports fan, Arthur especially enjoyed baseball and golf.
As a young man, he played for the title winning Portuguese American Civic Club baseball team, earning himself the nickname, “Lefty” for his well-known left-handed pitching skills.
Arthur was a 63 year member of the Taunton Elks Lodge 150, where he enjoyed playing cards three to four times a week after he retired.
He had widely varied interests and activities, among which were building his own cabin cruiser, owning and keeping horses, and as a licensed real estate broker, owning a real estate business.
Arthur especially enjoyed spending time with his many step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a communicant of St. Nicholas of Myra Church.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a stepson, Reid A. Bond and his wife Geri of Homosassa, FL, two stepdaughters, Christine Berkeley and her husband Dave of Scituate, MA and Carolyn Halloran and Mark Giroux of Dighton; ten step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the husband of the late Celeste (Andrade) Costa, and the brother of the late Melinda Furtado.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Friday, Aug. 14th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Nicholas of Myra Church, North Dighton at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Taunton.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 13th from 6 to 8 p.m.
