Obituary

William Stewart Brines of Marshfield Hills died on Wednesday may 4 at Avery Manor in Needham. He was 94 years old. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah the son of a professional motivational speaker, Moses James Brines and pianist, Judith Evans Brines. He graduated from Peddie Preparatory School and was a graduate of Brown University Class of 1934. Mr. Brines also did graduate work at Rutgers University. Mr. Brines was Chief of the Hospitals section and a consultant to the President for the World War II War Production Board. He served as the Hospital Administrator at Newton Wellesley Hospital for 23 years and was Chairman of the New England Hospital Assembly and Chairman of the American College of Hospital Administrators. Prior to his employment at Newton Wellesley Hospital, Mr. Brines had been administrator at Malden Hospital, Pittsfield Hospital and Central Maine General Hospital.
Mr. Brines’ lifelong interests included extensive travel nationally and abroad. His love of trains derived from family association with the Union Pacific Railroad. He served for many years on the Camp Committee of Camp Becket in the Berkshires. He was also a supporter of the Marshfield Historical Society, the Governor Winslow House and the Massachusetts Audubon Society as well as many other community and charitable associations.
Music filled his life from singing in church choirs, playing piano for friends and family, to playing saxophone in various dance and Dixie Land jazz bands from the 1930’s to the 1990’s. Family and friends have memories of musical “wake up calls” during stays at the summer house on Cape Cod and impromptu burst of song and piano music throughout the years.
Mr. Brines was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Jean (McClure) Brines and the father of James McClure Brines of Falmouth, Kincaid Brines Early of Fairlawn Ohio, and Duncan Stewart Brines of Waitsfield VT. He was the brother of the late Dr. John (Jack) Brines and Judith Wallace. He also leaves his six grandchildren, Ian, Anna, Emily, Zachary, Michael and Douglas.
