Obituary

Frederick L. Smith, 60 of Medford, passed away peacefully May 3, after a short illness during which he was comforted by the tender care and loving support of his family and many friends.


Formerly of Malden, Mr. Smith was the son of Frederick “Ted” and Helen Marie Smith, both deceased. Cherished husband of thirty-nine years, he is survived by his wife Janice L. (Muise). He was a devoted father to Michelle and Steve Herrmann of Ft. Myers, FL and Paul and Shannon Smith of Medford. Fred has three grandsons: Zachary, Randy and Jason. He was a dear friend of Sr. Irena Normantis of Medford.


Mr. Smith was the brother of Carol McLaughlin of E. Hampstead, NH, Jean and Ray Germain of Haverhill, MA, Linda and George McCool of Camp Hill, PA, Ken and Karen Smith of E. Hampstead, NH. He was the Godfather of Rachel (Boyd) Chase and Charlotte James Chase of Derry, NH and Colleen Germain of Manchester, NH. Son-in-law of Zita Muise of Medford. Fred was the brother-in-law of Phyllis and Larry Phipps of Tewksbury, MA Uncle of four nieces and four nephews and leaves many cousins.


With qualities of sincerity, loyalty, generosity, and a great sense of humor, he inspired and was admired by many. He was blessed with several close lifelong friends. Fred became a Catholic eight years ago after living a Cursillo at St. Basil’s in Methuen. His faith was and anchor in his life. He was a Eucharistic Minister, a twenty- five year Friend of Bill W. and a member of the Knights of Columbus Medford Council 141. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and recently retired after thirty-seven years with Gillette Co. Fred was a 2004 recipient of the Celtic Cross.
An avid sports fan, he was also a voracious reader of mystery novels, loved walking, travel, the beach, chocolate chip cookies, coffee frappes, chocolate/chocolate cake, the theater, and summers at Cape Cod. Fred was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed listening to Celtic music.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Glastonbury Abbey Capital Campaign, 16 Hull Street, Hingham, MA 02043 or to Hallmark Health Hospice 100 Hospital Road, Malden, MA 02148.
Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD Friday at 8:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrating Fred’s life in St. Raphael Church 512 High St., Medford at 9:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held Thursday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
