Cyrus G. Goldman, of Salem, NH, died Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH following a lengthy illness. He was born in Chelsea, MA the son of Russian immigrants, Joseph and Minnie (Fox) Goldman whose six sons served in every branch of the Armed Forces during WWII. Mr. Goldman attended schools in Revere, MA and graduated from Revere High School where he was on the track and football teams. Mr. Goldman served in the US Army and was a member of the 7th NY Regiment, 771st AAA Gn Bn and saw combat in the Pacific Theater. He attained the rank of S/SGT. Upon discharge from the service, he worked for Kraft Foods and Food Enterprises until he moved to Rye, NH in 1953. In 1954, he became co-owner of Shyer’s Lobster Pound in Salem. He moved to Derry, then in 1966 to Salem. He retired from the business in 1985 due to illness.
He was proud of his vegetable garden and the fact that he used no pesticides. He enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with friends. His interests were varied from Archeology to Egyptology and he liked to quote Shakespeare. He loved nature and animals and took great pleasure in watching the birds at the feeders. He was an avid freshwater fisherman, casting his line whenever he got a chance. Most recently, while being confined to an electric wheelchair, he took up candlepin and kingpin bowling. He loved anything connected with the Irish culture and could be heard singing Irish songs all during the year. He liked to sit in his wheelchair in the driveway and wave to passerby’s whom he dubbed “his public”. He got immense joy from watching people drive by and having them smile, wave to him or in the case of his motorcycle “buddies” give him the thumbs up or have the truck drivers blow their horns at him. To all of you, please know your smile, wave, thumbs up or blowing your horn as you drove by, cheered him in his final months. We do not know who you are, nor your names, but from the bottom of our hearts we Thank You.
Mr. Goldman was a charter member of the Merrimack Valley Diabetes Assoc., and was a 38 year member of the Spicket Lodge #85 F & AM of Salem. He was a Shriner, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the 7th NY Regiment and a member of the Salem Senior Center. He was a life member fo the DAV and served as Jr. Vice Commander and Sr. Vice Commander of the William Baron Chapter #25 in Salem.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, two brothers, Melvin Goldman of Foxboro, MA, Israel Goldman (aka Mike Storm) of Revere, MA, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Samuel, Hymen and Meyer, and a sister Sadie Litwack. He also leaves behind his adoptive families, the Smith, Armstrong, Minihan and Bixby’s of Merrimac, MA, and his friends at Silverthorne Day Care Center and Greystone Farms assisted living.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, May 15th at 2:00pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 - 2:00pm prior to the service. At his request there will be no flowers.
