Obituary

George John Faris, Sr. Age 72. Husband of Helen (Ferreira) Faris. Residence 74 Quequechan St., Fall River, MA. Died Monday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, MA. Son of the late John M. Faris Eid and the late Mary (Simon) Faris Eid. He was a life long resident of Fall River. He was a Deputy Chief of Police for Newport Naval Base. He worked at BJ’s Wholesale Club in No. Dartmouth for 10 years.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict from 1951-1959, serving on the USS Waldron as a Boiler Tender. He joined the U.S.Department of Defense Police in 1964 and worked his way through the ranks from Patrolman until his appointment to Deputy Chief of Police. He earned his Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Bristol Community College and was the first Police Officer in Department history to be promoted to the rank of Captain.
Throughout his career, he earned numerous awards and citations and dedicated himself to bringing pride, respect, and positive changes to his department. He was instrumental in spearheading his Department’s Police Training Academy and was an instructor and liaison. In 1982, he graduated from the 130th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He retired from the U.S. Dept. of Defense Police in 1989 after 25 years of service. His family & friends will sadly miss him.

Besides his wife of Fall River, he is survived by One Son George J. Faris, Jr. of Westport, MA. Two Daughters: Jeanne Smith of Assonet, MA and Cheryl Pope of Fall River, MA. One Brother: Thomas J. Faris of Fall River, MA. Three Sisters: Agatha Goodson of Somerset, MA, Eva Simon of Providence, RI and Sally Hetzler of Fall River,MA. Three Grandchildren: Sonja, Nicolas, and Alex and Several Nieces and Nephews. He was also brother of the late Kamil J. Faris.

His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 No. Main St., Fall River, MA on Saturday at 8:30A.M. followed by a funeral mass in St. Anthony of the Desert Church, Eastern Ave., Fall River, MA at 9:30A.M. Internment in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River, MA. Calling hours Friday 5-9 P.M.
