Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – John W. “Jack” Carney, Jr., 80, of Marco Island, FL and a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, July 30, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on August 20, 1934, the beloved son of the late John W. Carney, Sr. and Delia (Rielly) Carney. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from Springfield Trade High School and lived in Springfield for many years. He served his country in the United States Army following the Korean War and attained rank of Specialist Fourth Class. He was employed with the City of Springfield as a Supervisor and Senior Electrician and was a member of the Electrician’s Local 7 in Springfield. Jack was also the longtime owner of the former Colonial Mobilephone and Paging Service on Parker Street in Springfield. Jack was proud of his Irish Heritage and traveled to Ireland with his late wife, Shirley. Jack was often seen in the neighborhood and in Florida driving his cherished BMW Z4 Roadster. Most of all, he was a wonderful provider to his family and showered them with his love and affection. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Springfield where he served his parish as a Eucharistic Minister for nursing homes and the homebound. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Shirley A. (Jerold) Carney who was Called Home on April 13, 2011. They were married on June 11, 1955 at the former Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee and were blessed with over 55 years of happiness together. He leaves his loving son and daughter-in-law, Kevin M. Carney and his wife, Rebecca, of Brimfield; his cherished granddaughter, Meghan D. Carney of Brimfield; and numerous friends including Joyce O’Connor of Westfield and Pauline Roberts of Chicopee. In addition, Jack leaves many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Carney and Jerold families. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Service of Committal with United States Army Military Honors on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Children’s Miracle Network at Baystate Medical Center, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
