Obituary

Leo M. Stewart, 85, of Fairhaven, formerly of New Bedford, died Friday April 29, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Therese M. (O'Leary) Stewart.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Monroe L. and Mary (McBride) Stewart, he lived in New Bedford most of his life, before moving to Our Lady's Haven in Fairhaven two years ago.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

During World War II, Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with the 3rd Infantry Division. He served in Korea from 1950-1951 with the 10th Field Artillery. He retired from the Army in 1962 as a Sergeant First Class, after 23 years of service. He then was employed at the Paul A. Dever School in Taunton for 21 years as Chief Campus Police Officer until his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, James L. Stewart of Fall River and Thomas P. Stewart and his wife Verna of New Bedford; his daughter-in-law, Donna Stewart of New Bedford; a sister, Anita Casey of Florida; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Robert S. Stewart, and the brother of the late Raymond J. Stewart, Harvey L. Stewart, Edna Olsen, and Ellen Thurmond.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Tuesday May 3, 2005 at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Monday May 2, 2005 from 5-8 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
