Raymond “Sonny” Benoit
...retired from Lowell DPW; age 77
TEWKSBURY - Raymond “Sonny” Benoit, age 77, a veteran of WWII and a retired City of
Lowell employee, died Thursday morning, April 28, at the Willow Manor Nuring Center in
Lowell after lengthy illness. He was the husband of Joan E. (Arlin) Benoit, with whom he had
celebrated a 48th wedding anniversary this past September 1st.
He was born in Tewksbury, April 13, 1928, a son of the late Arthur and Agnes (Hurley) Benoit.
He was raised in Tewksbury, but had lived the greater part of his life in the
Lowell. He returned to the Carnation Drive senior housing complex in Tewksbury several years
ago.
During WWII he served in the U.S. Army.
He had been employed by Lowell’s Department of Public Works for more than 30 years, when he
retired in 1990.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Mansur and her husband
Thomas of Derry, NH; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Linda (Catzanaro) Benoit of
Lawrence, and Walter and Colleen (Casey) Benoit of Merrimack, NH; eight
grandchildren, Thomas, Joseph and Corey Mansur, Tanya, Casey and Mollie Benoit, Matthew and
Brittany Sores; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John “Jinks” and his wife Gladys (Doliber) Benoit
of Chelmsford, Thomas and his wife Joan (Smith) Benoit of Tewksbury; two sisters, Agnes David
of Billerica, Mary Turcotte of Tewksbury; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Arthur Benoit, J. Howard Benoit, William Benoit and Robert Benoit.
His Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 3, in St. William’s Church,Tewksbury. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials
to the American Stroke Assn., division of the American Heart Assn., 20 Speen St. Framingham,
MA 01701-4688 will be appreciated.
