Obituary

Mrs. Ann Esther (Smith) McVey, a resident of Andover for more than 53 years, passed away peacefully at home on July 14, 2015. She was 84 years old.
Ann was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on June 6, 1931, to the late George and Esther (Hardman) Smith. She was a first generation American on her maternal side of the family. Her mother had emigrated to the United States from England in 1907.
Ann was raised in North Andover and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1949. She attended business school where she met her husband, Paul J. McVey. Ann started her career as a legal secretary in Lawrence and, while raising her three children, she worked as the secretary at Sanborn Elementary School. Later in her career she worked for Avco / Textron in Wilmington.
In her younger years, Ann had served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and was a member of the Andona Society. She enjoyed her time participating on multiple bowling leagues, playing 45’s, and traveling with her family. She will be dearly missed.
Ann is survived by her husband, Paul, with whom she just celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary. In addition to her husband she is survived by her children; Paul D. and his wife Joanne McVey of Haverhill; Katherine A. and her husband Keith H. Werner of Safety Harbor, Florida; and Mary E. and her husband Mark Vernaglia of Andover; sister, Joanne Powers of Seabrook, NH; brother-in-law, Jack and his wife Jean McVey of Newburyport; grandchildren, Katie McVey Palmeira, Kristen McVey, Alexander and Nicholas Waszczuk, and Tom and AJ Vernaglia, and several nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover, on Monday, July 20, 2015, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, on Sunday, July 19, 2015, from 4 to 7 PM. Interment will be private.
