NEW BEDFORD -- Joseph J. Caldas, 87, of New Bedford died after a period of declining health Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Mariner Health Care Center. He was the widower of Margaret (Morrell) Caldas.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Fermino and Palmira (Conceico) Caldas. He lived in this area all his life.
He was an Army veteran of World War II; he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.
Mr. Caldas was a machinist at Acushnet Rubber Co. for more than 25 years until he retired.
Survivors include a stepson, Raymond F. Genereux, and his wife, Annette, of New Bedford; two stepdaughters, Shirley Carrier of Lowell and Dorothy Daylor of New Bedford; several stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and his companion, Doris Norton of New Bedford.
He was the brother of the late Edward Caldas.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., with a Mass at 9 at the Church of the Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mount Pleasant Street. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery
