Obituary

Philip A. Bernard, 72, of Fairhaven died April 18, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital reluctantly after a very long illness.
He was the husband of Patricia (Dervan) Bernard.
Born and raised in Boston, son of the late Andrew and Margaret (Harrington) Bernard, he lived in the Southcoast area for many years.
Mr. Bernard was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fairhaven and a former communicant and Eucharistic minister at St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett.
He was formerly employed with the United States Customs Service in Boston, New Bedford and Providence for many years until retiring as Director of Customs in Rhode Island.
Mr. Bernard served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Rhode Island Trade Club, the Propeller Club of the United States Port of Providence, RI and Georgetown, SC and was named Man of the Year while in Providence, charter member of the Par-Tee Golf Association, member of the Belle Isle Yacht Club in South Carolina and was the recipient of the Albert Galantin Award by Lloyd Benson, Secretary of State.
He enjoyed life, quahogging, gardening, spending time with his family and friends and watching the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Philip J. Bernard, and his wife Becky, of Falmouth and Stephen D. Bernard, and his wife Angela, of Pembroke; 2 daughters, Janine A. Peccini, and her husband Fred, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Regina M. Sisk, and her husband James, of Milton; 2 brothers, Richard Bernard of Sagamore and Lawrence Bernard of Hyannis; 5 sisters, Patricia Hamilton, and her husband David, of Marion, Margaret Kelley, and her husband Francis, of Buzzards Bay, Pauline Petrie of Bourne, Ann Roche, and her husband Frank, of Whiting, NJ and Regina Casale, and her husband Richard, of Hollis, NH; 4 grandchildren, Jonathan Peccini, Kevin Sisk, Ann Sisk and Lindsay Bernard; son-in-law of Mary (Cunningham) Dervan of Boston; many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Andrew Bernard, John F.X. Bernard, Jean Moroney and George Newlands.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett Thursday, April 21st at 11 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 12 Noon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting hours Wednesday, April 20th from 4-8 PM.
Interment St. Anthony's Cemetery.
