TEWKSBURY - Sonya M. Thomas-Hawkins, age 38, a former resident of Lawrence, died
Sunday evening, April 17, after an eleven year battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Independence, Louisiana, on April 14, 1967, a daughter of Thelma (Cyprian-
Thomas) Potter of Lawrence, and the late Jesse James Thomas. She moved to Lawrence in her
infancy, where she was educated and was graduated from Lawrence High School. She moved to
Atlanta, Georgia, where she had lived until returning to Tewksbury one year ago.
She was employed as a receptionist at Flowpak Inc., in Atlanta.
Since her return to Massachusetts, she had been a member of the New Life Christian Church in
Lowell.
Besides her mother, she is survived by two sons, David Thomas of Lowell and Malcolm Hawkins
of Tewksbury; two daughters, Tyana Hawkins and Alicia Hawkins both of Tewksbury; her step-
father, Ian Potter of Lawrence; two brothers, Jesse James Thomas Jr of Lawrence and Calvin
Thomas of Lowell; three sisters, Leslie Thomas and Mary Thomas of Lawrence, and Phyllis
“Tiny” Thomas of Lowell; one grandson, Isaiah; her maternal grandmother, Mary (Brooks)
Mosley of LA; dear friends, Robyn Unger and David Paterson of Tewksbury; and many aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her funeral service was held Saturday, April 23, in the New Life Christian
Church, 150 Middlesex St., Lowell. Memorials to the New Life Christian Church, 150 Middlesex St.
Lowell, MA 01852, will be appreciated.
