Joseph "Chic" Santos, 84, of East Freetown died April 14, 2005 at home after a long illness.
He was the former husband of Mildred L. (Lynch) Sowa of East Freetown, who was also his caregiver.
Born in Fairhaven, son of the late Frank and Joquina (Luiz) Santos, he lived in New Bedford most of his life before moving to East Freetown 2 years ago.
Mr. Santos was a communicant of St. Joseph-St. Therese Church in New Bedford.
He was formerly employed by International Laborers Union Local 385 for many years until his retirement. Prior to that, he was employed with the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket Steamship Authority.
Mr. Santos was a member of the Panthers Athletic & Social Club in New Bedford.
Survivors include his former wife; 2 sons, First Hand Steward Brian Santos and Timothy Santos, both of New Bedford; 2 daughters, Kathleen Nasser, and her husband Dr. Francis E. Nasser, Jr., of Lakeville and Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Leonard, and her husband Lieutenant Colonel Mark Leonard, of Alexandria, VA; 3 brothers, John Santos, Antone Santos and Arthur Santos, all of New Bedford; 7 sisters, Irene Gioiosa, Mary Jesus and Grace Gonsalves, all of New Bedford, Louise Sylvia of Wareham, Hilda Giarrusso and Elvira Peterson, both of Rhode Island and Millie Baptiste of Florida; 4 grandchildren, Mark Liarikos, Macaila Saunders, Ian Saunders and Briana Santos; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Friday, April 15th from 5-7 PM, with his Funeral Service to be held at 6:45 PM.
Interment private.
