WEBSTER – Francis N. “Skippy” Sczepanski, 90, of 65 North Main St., died Tuesday, April 12, in the Life Care Center of Auburn. His wife of 57 years, Mary A. (Stapor) Sczepanski, died in 2003.
He leaves 3 daughters, Francesca A. Stasko of West Dennis, Margaret R. Macuga and Ursula M. Faber, both of Dudley, a son, Paul F. Sczepanski of Webster; 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by 6 brothers, John, Edward, Anthony, Charles, Walter and Norman Sczepanski, and by 2 sisters, Mae Santor and Bernice Barry.
He was born in Webster, the son of Paul and Wanda (Jezierski) Sczepanski, and lived here most of his life. He was the president of the class of 1933 at Bartlett High School. He then completed studies at the Worcester Art Museum School of Art.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. As a sergeant in the 495th Artillery Battalion, he earned a bronze star for his meritorious service in combat in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He taught soldiers how to identify enemy planes flying over England.
Mr. Sczepanski began his teaching career in a one-room school house. He then was an art and ceramics teacher on both the elementary and secondary levels in the Dudley-Charlton Regional School System, retiring in 1980. He also was the manager of the Quinebaug Drive-In for many years. After retiring, he used his time to create an extensive collection of oil paintings, some depicting local scenes.
He was a member of St. Joseph Basilica, and sang in its choir as a tenor for many years. It was at choir rehearsals that he first met his wife. He loved growing flowers and tending to his vegetable garden.
The funeral will be held.Saturday, April16, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Basilica, 53 Whitcomb St. Burial will be in St. Joseph Garden of Peace.
