Obituary

BRENNER, Gerald Harvey, 69, of Revere formerly of Brookline, died June 29th. Beloved husband of Diane Lynn (Massarsky) Brenner, son of the late William J. & Gertrude (Katz) Brenner. Born, raised & educated in Brookline a graduate of Brookline High School. Brenner Companies, Inc. (formerly Brenner Paper Box Co., Inc.) of Chelsea, was started in 1922 by William J. Brenner as a distribution company of paper boxes & paper-packaging supplies. When Mr. Brenner had a major heart attack in November of 1962 his son Gerald took over as CEO at the age of 16. In 1973 Brenner Paper Box Co., was involved in the highly publicized “Chelsea Fire Disaster” & burned to the ground at 139 Everett Ave. Gerry successfully obtained & paid off previous debts. Note: Brenner Paper was back in business four days after the fire in rented space & operating with replaced inventory because of long term relationships with suppliers. In November of 1973, construction was started at the present site; 31 Osprey Rd. Saugus, (the land was previously purchased by Gerald & his mother in 1972), in May 1974 they occupied the new premises. In the interim an addition was added to the building in 1983, & two new stores were added to the business. Exclusive Millinery, a bridal hat, jewelry & accessory store was opened in March of 1984 drawing off the large bridal & prom business of Brenner’s Party Store. Then in November 1984 space that was rented became available & the Saugus Shoe Barn was opened. Co-founded in 1984 by Gerald & Diane; Saugus Shoe Co, Inc. was one of the top three distributors of shoes & handbags for the wedding, prom & formalwear industries in the United States & Worldwide. Besides his wife Gerry is survived by his children William Brenner & his wife Erin of Haverhill, Wendi Joy Brenner & her partner Jennifer Brault, Shira Beth Brenner & her partner Justin Bruhl, Stacey Colman & her husband Sean & Brian Anderson & his wife Sharane of Lynnfield. Dear brother of Elaine Johnston of Dedham & the late Marlene Brenner. Zaydie to his six loving grandchildren Sean, Duncan, Lily, Chase, Hunter, Poppy & two nephews Craig & Jimmy of Dedham, he was also predeceased by his son Michael. He will forever be in our hearts as the man who always looked over us. He was an entrepreneur & a true Mensch. Graveside service to be held at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA on Thursday at 1:45PM. Memorial observance to be held at the Brenner home following burial till 8PM and Friday July 3rd from 12-5PM.Assisting the family with arrangements is the Torf Funeral Service 151 Washington Ave., Chelsea.
