Obituary

CHICOPEE – Roger J. Soucy, 92, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, June 19, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at Willimansett Center East in Chicopee surrounded by all the memories he loved and cherished. He was born at home on Maple Street in Chicopee Falls on August 8, 1922, a beloved son of the late Joseph T. and Louise (Coutu) Soucy. He was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee High School and was a lifelong resident of the city. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II with Company B, 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion, attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Class. He served in the Southern Philippines and Luzon and received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Service Star, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was last employed as a postal worker at the US Postal Service Bulk Mail Center in Indian Orchard. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid cyclist and a member of the Cyclonauts. He was an avid climber who hiked and climbed several mountains including Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Ranier. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving daughter, Rachel L. Soucy who was Called Home on November 16, 2013; his cherished grandson, John Kaafi; his dear sister and brother-in-law, Theresa B. Beaulieu who was Called Home on October 19, 1995 and her husband, Paul A. Beaulieu who was Called Home on November 26, 2005; and his dear brother-in-law, William P. Jones who was Called Home on December 1, 1984. He leaves his three loving daughters, Cheryl K. Soucy of Chicopee, Nadine A. Hoey and her husband, William, of Worcester and Joanne L. Soucy of Midland, TX; his five cherished grandchildren, Joseph R. Ricker and his wife, Michelle, Jason R. Ricker and his wife, Michelle, William T. Hoey and his wife, Jennifer, Katherine Larsen and her husband, Christopher, and Benjamin Kaafi; his nine cherished great-grandchildren; Kellie and Joseph Ricker, Jake and Ella Ricker, Sydney Larsen, John and Ya’Darius Kaafi, and Benjamin and Isaiah Kaafi; his loving sister, Noella S. Jones of Springfield; his former wife, Katherine R. Panaia of Sarasota, FL; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Soucy family. His family and friends are invited to attend a Service of Committal with US Army Military Honors on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
