Obituary

ROBERTA (CHANDLER) GILBERT, age 92, of Hingham, died on Wednesday, March 23rd at the Harbor House Nursing Center in Hingham after a brief illness.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Gilbert lived in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Illinois before moving to Massachusetts 15 years ago. During her lifetime, Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed several careers, including retail manager of Marshall Fields Department Store, special education teacher and guidance counselor, all in Pennsylvania. She was an avid bridge player and also a published writer, whose work included a weekly column for seniors in the Hingham Journal. Throughout her life, she was an active volunteer in church activities and community organizations. She was an active member of the Hingham Congregational Church.

Wife of the late Rollin P. Gilbert, she was the daughter of the late Florence and Robert Chandler. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Gilbert-Whitner and son-in-law Michael Whitner of Hingham, and two grandchildren; Claire of Los Angeles, CA and Eric of Hingham.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Saturday, April 2nd at 10 AM at the Hingham Congregational Church, 378 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham.

Visiting hours and flowers are omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Pine Street Inn, 444 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118 or to Save the Children, 52 Wilton Rd., Westport, CT 06880.

The interment is private.
