Barney Helfand, 91, of Mattapoisett died Tuesday March 22, 2005 at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary (Griffin) Helfand.
Born in Dartmouth, the son of the late Harry and Gussie (Rosofsky) Helfand, he lived in Mattapoisett for most of his life.
Mr. Helfand was formerly employed at Mutterpearl Manufacturing in New Bedford for 47 years, retiring as a production manager in 1979. He devoted the last 25 years of his life to his beloved garden on Crystal Spring Road, supplying local residents and restaurants with fresh vegetables throughout each summer.
He was an active member of the Mattapoisett Bowling League and the Machacom Club. He was very pleased that he got to see the Boston Red Sox win more than one World Series in his lifetime.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Helfand, and his wife Louisa, of Milford, Mass., and David Helfand, and his wife Jada Rowland, of New York City; two brothers, Arnold Helfand of West Hartford, Conn., and Samuel Helfand of Newport News, Virginia; six sisters, Edith Helfand and Sophie Helfand, both of Dartmouth, Ida Glickman of Somerset, Florence Hein of Kensington, Maryland, Lila Gallensky of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Janet Deaner of Rochester, Minnesota; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Thomas Helfand, Howard Helfand, Milton Helfand and Elliot Helfand.
His Graveside Service will be held on Friday March 25, 2005 at 12 Noon in Tifereth Israel Cemetery, New Bedford. Visiting hours at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett, Thursday March 24, 2005 from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Future Farmers of America Scholarship Fund, c/o Bristol County Agricultural School, 135 Center St., Dighton, MA 02715.
