Obituary

Rev. George S McDermott of Worcester Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born in Corning New York to the late Clyde and Elizabeth (Borst) McDermott on October 13, 1933. He was the beloved father of Carol Hart, grandfather of Landon Cayce Hartley, great-grandfather of Jackson and Norah Hartley, all of Indianapolis. Brother to Clyde “Mike” of New York, Beverly of Arkansas, Patricia Dakin of Florida and Louise “Sharon” Robbins of New York. He is also survived by his beloved guide dog Kernel and several nieces and nephews.
Rev. McDermott graduated from Corning Free Academy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Colgate University in 1955. He received a Master of Arts in Religious Education from Hartford Seminary in 1962. He also did graduate work at Andover Newton Theological School prior to his ordination in 1966.
Rev. McDermott had a long career as a pastor, counselor, advisor and professor. He was a pastor at Metropolitan community Church in Providence, Indianapolis, Boston and Worcester. For the past 23 years Rev. McDermott has been a valued adjunct faculty member at Quinsigamond Community College in the social sciences department.
He was an active member of the MCCC union, the MTA and the NEA. He was actively involved with the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, the National Federation for the Blind, and the National Association of Guide Dog Users. He was a longtime volunteer with the Talking Book Service at the Worcester Public Library and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Worcester.
Friends and family may visit on Thursday, June 11th from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. in First Baptist Church, 111 Park Avenue. His funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 111 Park Avenue, Worcester, MA 01609 or the American Federation for the Blind, 2 Penn Plaza, Suite 1102, New York, NY 10121.
