Joan Crowell Siegfried, 90, of Provincetown, died at Seashore Point Wellness Center on May 28, 2015.
Born in Pittsburg, PA, she was the only child of Margaret and Henry Siegfried. She grew up in a loving household which included her parents, her aunts; Agnes and Mildred Bird and her grandparents.
After earning her B.F.A. degree in Pictorial Design at Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1947, she went on to New York City to continue her education at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. From 1952 - 1954, with the aid of two Fulbright Grants, she attended École du Louvre and the Sorbonne doing research on Edward Manet.
She completed work on her Master’s thesis "Manet's Style and Spanish Painting" in 1955. She then began working on her Ph.D. in Art History while lecturing at Wellesley College, where she contributed writings to college publications and was also a member of the editorial board of “Marsyas”.
She received two grants, one in 1962 and one in 1963, from the American Association of University Women which enabled her to complete her thesis "The Formation of the Impressionist Style in Painting". She received her Ph.D. from New York University in 1964.
Joan left Wellesley in 1964, to continue her teaching career at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She wrote several exhibition catalogs, and it may be said that her favorite project was her contributions published in "The Nineteenth Century Architecture of Saratoga Springs", a publication sponsored by the New York Council on the Arts.
Her second trip abroad to study art and architecture was to England in 1971.
Joan Siegfried visited Provincetown for many summers, coming here to stay in 1995. She will best be remembered by those who knew her for her kindness, generosity, sense of humor and intelligence.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm, Sunday, October 4th,at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown.
