NATICK: Edward James Powers, age 80, died on Monday morning, May 25, 2015, with family by his side in his Natick home. Ed was the devoted and loving husband of Ann (Zurca) Powers for 61 years, and the loving father of David J. Powers and his wife Michelle of Boston, Thomas G. Powers and his wife Heather of Westwood, and the late Gregory E. Powers. He was the caring and generous “Pop Pop” to grandsons Connor, Sean, and Roman Powers.
Ed was born on December 16, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Leo and Eleanor (Kling) Powers. He was the cherished brother of John J. Powers, Marilyn E. Cimino, Angela L. Powers, Terri F. Powers, Patricia F. Shamis, Lynda M. Zobel, and the late Leo A. Powers, Mary H. Bader, and Ellie E. Garson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
Ed proudly served with the United States Air Force as a medic stationed at Goose Bay in Labrador and on Baffin Island within the Nunavut Territory during the Korean War. After those assignments he was transferred to Lubbock, Texas, where he was joined by Ann. The couple returned to Philadelphia in 1956 where Ed became an electrical contractor in the construction industry for the Pinter Swicker Electric Co. He was later employed for many years as Vice President of Hawes Electric Company in Watertown, where he served as the electrical contractor on several major Boston developments. He was a long time member of the Greater Boston Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, and a fifty-year member of IBEW Local 98 in Philadelphia.
The Powers’ settled in Natick in 1969, where they made a warm and loving home for their three sons. Previously leading members of the Descent of the Holy Spirit Romanian Orthodox Church in Elkins Park, PA, Ed and Ann have been devoted members of Annunciation Orthodox Church of Natick, where Ed had faithfully served for many years as President and Board member.
His Funeral Service will be in the Annunciation Orthodox Church, 37 Washington Street, Natick, on Monday, June 1st at 11:00AM. Burial with military honors will follow at Dell Park Cemetery, Natick. Visiting hours in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, will be on Sunday, 2:00 – 5:00P.M.
