Obituary

Esther M. (Rotondi) Capone, age 93, a long-time resident of Winchester, passed away at Winchester Hospital on May 25, 2015. She was the beloved wife for 57 years of the late Paul A. Capone. Born, raised and educated in Melrose, Esther was the daughter of the late George and Marie (Bevilacqua) Rotondi.

Mrs. Capone was employed as a stenographer with the National Radio Company, which developed radio messages for soldiers during the war. “Esta”, as she was lovingly known, was most proud of her title as homemaker. Her daughter fondly recalled that she was famous for her cooking and baking, especially her Italian cookies. Mrs. Capone made her own shapes for the cookies, and whenever she brought them to a picnic or a party, the hostess would always hide some so she could enjoy them later. The family Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day "cookouts" were legendary. Esta always prepared above and beyond the standard cookout fare, and everybody went home with something.

Mrs. Capone was the loving mother of Patricia “Patti” Mawn and her husband Kevin of Winchester, Pamela Ann Capone of FL, Peter A. Capone of Winchester and the late Paul A. Capone Jr.. She was predeceased by 12 brothers and sisters, and is survived by 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Thursday, May 28th at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Winchester at 10AM. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to the Winchester Veterans Memorial Honor Roll, C/O Whip Saltmarsh, 154 Mt. Vernon St., Winchester, MA 01890 or to St. Mary’s Church, 158 Washington St., Winchester.
