Obituary

Gilbert M. Cherry, 92 of Swampscott long time beloved partner of Shirley Ashman died May 21, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Alfred and Lena (Kaplan) Cherry. Raised and educated in Cambridge, he was a graduate of Harvard University and Boston University Graduate School of Education.
An honorably discharged veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army. He was employed as a teacher at Chelsea High School. He also worked part time as a cook at Wonderland Dog Track and the Ritz Carlton Hotel and was past president of Temple B’Nai Israel.
Gilbert is survived by his children Deborah of Lynn, Elyse of Brookline, Howard of NY, step children Louise Goodman and her husband Michael of Lexington and William Ashman and his wife Debbie of Littleton, grandchildren Jacob Cherry and Rebecca Cherry and step grandchildren Jesse Goodman, Daniel, Ben and Becky Ashman.
Funeral service to be held from the Torf Funeral Chapel 151 Washington Ave, Chelsea on Tuesday May 26th at 11:00 AM. Interment in Beth Shalom of Cambridge Cemetery, 232 Fuller St. Everett. Memorial observance to be held from his home in Swampscott following the burial & from the home of Deborah Cherry in Lynn Tuesday till 7:00pm and Wednesday and Thursday 1-5PM and 7-9PM. Contributions in Gilbert’s name may be made to Care Dimensions Hospice 75 Sylvan St. Danvers, MA 01923 or Temple B’Nai Israel 1 Wave Ave. Revere, MA 02151.
