Obituary

MYSTIC: Mary Welles Gremley, 100, died Tuesday evening at Mystic Manor after a brief illness. The daughter of William Peckham and Isabelle Dean Welles, she lived in Mystic and Old Mystic all her life. She married Charles M. Gremley in November of 1921. She was an employee of the former Noyes Drygoods Store on Main Street in Mystic for many years.

Mary was a member of Union Baptist Church for 52 years, having often served as a deacon. She also held office in the Women’s Fellowship and attended Bible study faithfully. As committee chairwoman, she arranged many concerts to raise funds for the Steinway Grand Piano for the sanctuary at her church. Always interested in music, she enjoyed attending programs at the Eastern Connecticut Symphony in New London.

Mary’s hobby was crafting rugs, both braided and beautifully hooked rugs, which were part of many exhibitions both locally and out-of-state. She was a member of Rebekeh Lodge and Eastern Star, where she served as a Worthy Matron and in other offices.

She is survived by her daughter, Mildred G. Hodgson of Mystic, daughter-in-law Martha G. Gremley of Framingham, MA, four grandchildren, Christopher Hodgson, Karen Gartland, Kathryn Gremley and Robert Gremley, five great-grandchildren, Stephen Hodgson, Katrina Hodgson, Joseph Gartland, Amy Gartland and Sophia Gremley, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, her son Richard Gremley, grandson Peter Hodgson and six siblings.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday, March 5 at 10:30am at Union Baptist Church, 119 High Street, Mystic. Burial will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Resident’s Recreation Fund at Mystic Manor, 475 High Street, Mystic CT 06355 or to the Union Baptist Church Music Program.
