Albert “Al” Pongonis Sr.
...Veteran of Navy and Marine Corps; 86
TEWKSBURY - Albert “Al” Pongonis Sr., age 86, a veteran of two branches of military service,
died Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Emerson Hospital in Concord, following a lengthy illness. He was
the husband of Dorothy M. (Keating) Pongonis, with whom he had celebrated a 57th wedding
anniversary this past Nov. 8th.
He was born in Kingston, PA, a son of the late George and Agatha (Dauksis) Pongonis. He was
raised in Edwardsville, PA, and entered in the Marine Corps prior to the outbreak of WWII. Upon
completion of his tour, following the entry of the United States in WWII, he reenlisted in the U.S.
Navy. He served as a gunners mate in the Pacific aboard L.S.T. boats. He had lived in
Tewksbury since 1940.
After discharge, Mr. Pongonis remained self employed as an insurance adjuster and later as a
wholesale distributor throughout his working career.
He was a life member and charter member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks, a member of the
American Legion Post 259 of Tewksbury, and former President of Keith Academy Mens Club. He
was also a communicant of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Albert Pongonis Jr. of Tewksbury and Robert G.
Pongonis of Littleton, CO; three grandsons, Robert C., Albert G. and Russell W. Pongonis all of
Littleton, CO.
He was also brother of the late Joseph, Anthony, Stanley and Julius Pongonis.
His Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Mar. 3, in St. William’s Church, Tewksbury. Burial with
Navy Honors was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
