Michael P. "Iron Mike" Sherrington, 60, of New Bedford Monday February 21, 2005 unexpectedly at home.
Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Albert E. and Ellen T. (Sherrington) St. John, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Sherrington was formerly employed as a firefighter for the New Bedford Fire Department for 15 years until his retirement due to an injury. He earned his nickname, "Iron Mike", from his fellow firefighters while serving with the department.
He was a member of the Madeira Club. He enjoyed fishing, playing softball, and going to the beach. He had been a member of the Fire Department Ping Pong Team. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include a son, Michael Sherrington of Arizona; a stepson, John Vertefeuille of New Bedford; a brother, Ronald St. John and his wife Judy of New Bedford; and his niece and godchild, Jennifer Miller of New Bedford.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday February 28, 2005 at 9 AM in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial with military honors will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Sunday February 27, 2005 from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
