Obituary

Helen Colombo 83, of Carver formerly of Brockton died peacefully with her family by her side April 28, 2015 at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. She was the wife for 60 years to the late Lou Colombo; they met at age 16 and until his death had never spent a day apart. Helen was born and raised in Brockton and was the daughter of the late Guy and Mildred (O’Connell) Newell. She graduated in 1949 from Brockton High School and went on to worked as a secretary at Dunnington’s Apothecary in Campello and later for many years as a purchasing agent at the former Cardinal Cushing Hospital; she retired in 1997.
Helen enjoyed playing bingo and would play as often as possible. She was a competitive card player and was known to be somewhat of a “Card Shark”; playing her favorite Rummy 500. She enjoyed time spent with her family especially her grandchildren; and listening to her grandson play piano. She loved her daily muffin and desserts as well as Dennisport vacations and many trips with Lou to Aruba; singing, dancing and watching Steve Harvey on Family Feud. She will be remembered as a breast cancer survivor, a meticulous lady with hair and makeup just so; a picky eater who insisted on hot food and one who loved a good hug.
Helen is survived by children Jean Skelly and her husband Peter of Wareham and Alexander Colombo and his fiance Debbie Rubicine of Palm Coast, FL; her grandchildren Justin Skelly of Onset, Courtney Skelly of Wareham and Anthony Colombo of San Diego, CA; her brothers William Newell of Plymouth and James Newell of W. Bridgewater. She was also the sister to the late Francis and John Newell and Mildred “Dina” Piasecki.
