Frederick William Berggren, 77, of 7 Ridge Street, Groton Long Point, died Monday at his home.
He was born in Ansonia on April 9, 1927 the son of Hjalmer and Bertha (Bruns) Berggren. He was a 1944 graduate of Ansonia High School and later received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of Connecticut. He also served in the US Navy during World War II.
Mr. Berggren was employed as a Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Lyman Hall High School for 20 years before his retirement in 1985. During the latter years of his career, he developed the Vocational Agricultural Curriculum for the State of Connecticut, completing it in his retirement in 1988.
A 32nd Degree Mason, he served as Past Master of the George Washington Lodge in Ansonia, and was a member of the Coastal Lodge #57 of Stonington, the Scottish Rite of New Haven and the York Rite of Mystic.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joy Raul Berggren; 4 children, Frederick Berggren Jr. of Noank, Diane Kononchik of Mystic, Gail Spinney of Norwich, and Eric Berggren of Granby; 2 stepsons, Garrett E. Brown Jr. of Princeton, NJ and David S. Brown of Venice, FL, 17 grandchildren, and a special cousin, Emily Dick of New Haven. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy (Eastwood) Berggren who died October 29, 1987.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday at 11am. There are no visiting hours.
