GRANBY – Irene L. (LaPoint) Smith, 89, of Granby, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born at home in the Village of West Warren in Warren, Massachusetts on February 16, 1926, a daughter of the late Joseph and Albina (St. Jacques) LaPoint. Around 1955, Irene and her late husband, William, built their home in Granby where they raised their family and shared many fond memories. She was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Granby. During her leisure time, she enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and working on puzzles. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, William W. Smith who was Called Home on April 22, 2008. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son, Thomas Smith; and her sister, Theresa Beebe. She leaves her two loving children, Christine A. Mendrala of Wales and Donald W. Smith and his wife, Jeri Case, of Lake Pleasant, MA; her five cherished grandchildren, Kimberly A. Mendrala, Jeffrey A. Mendrala and his wife, Elaina, Jennifer L. Wands and her husband, John Wands, Jr., Daphne E. Naylor and her husband, Jeremy, and Meghan L. Smith; her nine cherished great-grandchildren, Alexander Campbell and his partner, Mahia Valle, Allison and Michael Mendrala, Ashley, Emily, Andrew, and Erica Wands, and Rex and Dash Naylor; and her many dear nephews and nieces. A Service of Committal will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
