SOMERS, CT – William L. Bergamini, 92, of Somers, Connecticut, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, April 16, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life from his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield, MA on June 19, 1922, a beloved son of the late Robert J. Bergamini and Josephine (Annino) Bergamini. He was raised and lived in East Springfield, MA and graduated from Springfield Trade High School. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served his country as a Navy Salvage Diver and attained the rank of Carpenter’s Mate First Class. He received the American Theater Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal with Three Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. His Navy training provided him with his skills in carpentry and, shortly after his return to the area, he started the William L. Bergamini Home Building Company in Longmeadow. He was a well-known builder in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut where he built hundreds of new homes. He lived in Longmeadow, MA for 30 years where he built his wife, Gloria, their family home. He later moved to East Longmeadow, MA where he lived for 35 years before moving to Somers in 2013. He was a member of the Longmeadow American Legion, the Longmeadow Lions Club and the Home Builders Association of Springfield. Following his retirement, he continued crafting many wood pieces for his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Gloria M. (DeMont) Bergamini. They were married on November 1, 1947 at Saint Mary Church in East Hartford, CT and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving daughters, Sandra B. Kirkland and her husband, J. Bryan Kirkland, of West Suffield, CT and Linda B. Squire and her husband, Stephen D. Squire, of Stafford Springs, CT; his five cherished grandchildren, Dylan Kirkland, Haley Kirkland and her husband, Brian Frenette, Drew Kirkland, Samuel Squire and Lindsey Squire and her fiancé, Ryan Sullivan; his sister-in-law, Gina Bergamini of East Longmeadow; his sister-in-law of the DeMont family, Lorraine Nikitich of East Hartford, CT; and his many nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Bergamini and DeMont families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his three brothers, Joseph, Robert and Thomas Bergamini; and his two sisters, Gloria Coutts and Mary Lessard. His family would like to thank his friend and caregiver, Peggy Stachelsky, and the staff and volunteers at Home and Community Health Services of Enfield, CT for their kindness and compassion while caring for William during his illness.
