Obituary

PEABODY- Allan D. Carey, 89, husband of Dorothy L. (Friedline) Carey, of Peabody, died Monday afternoon, February 7, 2005 in the Twin Oaks Nursing Home, Danvers, following a long illness.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Andrew D. and Catherine M. (Cameron) Carey.
A graduate of Bowditch Elementary School and Salem High School in the class of 1933, he was a resident of Salem for over 30 years and lived in Lynn for a few years before moving to Peabody in 1953.

Prior to his retirement in 1978, he was employed by GTE Sylvania at the Loring Avenue, Salem plant for over 35 years and was a member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club and local 291, AFL-CIO.

An Army veteran of WWII, he served with the 160th Anti Aircraft Artillery Detachment in the Asiatic Pacific Theater at New Guinea and the Philippines and attained the rank of Technician 4th Grade.

Mr Carey was a member of the Lake Shore Park United Methodist Church, Lynn, where he was a former trustee, lay leader and youth group leader. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist church, while living in Salem. He was a ham radio operator with LicenseW1JNK, a member of the Yankee Radio Club, and was a volunteer at Songtime Radio Christian Ministries, then of Braintree, now located on Cape Cod. He loved trains, being with his family, family vacations and day trips to York Beach, Maine and Christmas lights displays. An avid reader, he enjoyed daily newspapers, especially the comics. He enjoyed sports and was a fan of the old Boston Braves with Warren Spahn, The New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. His music interests included big band sounds.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, he is survived by one son and his wife, Charles A. and Jane Carey of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, one daughter, Cheryl B. Carey of Peabody, two grandchildren, Andrew J. Carey of West Hollywood, CA, Jill E. Carey of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, one brother-in-law, Charles J. Friedline of Salem and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held Friday, February 11, 2005 at 11 am in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
