TEWKSBURY - Margaret Munro “Greta” (Leckie) Bowley, age 95, died Monday evening, April 13, after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Edward H. Bowley Jr., who died in 1992. She and her husband were the founders and owners of Tewksbury Industries, parent company of Tewksbury Metals, Madbury (NH) Metals, Tewksbury Auto Parts, and Portsmouth International Trading Company, automobile salvaging and recycling companies based in Tewksbury.
She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, February 11, 1920, one of four children of the late Adam and Marion (Munro) Leckie. She was raised in Scotland, and enlisted into the Royal Army, where she served during WWII as a Corporal. She met her future husband, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, married and emigrated to the U.S. as a “War Bride.” Greta maintained a delightful “Scottish Brogue” accent throughout her life, and will be remembered for her quick smile, cheerfully bright disposition, and the lively twinkle in her eyes.
Greta was an active member of the Tewksbury United Methodist Church community, and with her husband, was active supporting spouse in the Tewksbury Rotary Club, the Wamesit A.F. & A.M., the Allepo Shriners in Wilmington, the Scottish Rite and York Rite in Lowell. She and her late husband also enjoyed and sponsored nationally recognized Supermodified Racing teams, enjoyed international travel, and motorhome travel throughout the U.S. and Canada.
She leaves a son, Thomas E. Bowley and his partner, Elizabeth “Liz” Cleaves of Tewksbury; a daughter, Susan Dewhirst and her husband Thomas of Branford, CT; three grandchildren, Allison Dewhirst-Bowen and her husband Matthew of Ontario, Canada, Lindsay Dewhirst of N.Y.C., Peter Bowley of Tewksbury; and was predeceased by her siblings, Thomas Leckie, Jessie Forrest, and Anna White.
Visiting hours Friday, April 17, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER. Ph. (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. Her funeral will begin Saturday, April 18, at 10:00 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. in the Tewksbury United Methodist Church, corner of Main and South Sts. (Rte. 38) So. Tewksbury. Burial will follow at Tewksbury cemetery.
