Obituary

Mary Patricia “Pat” (Sullivan) Schecher, 87, died Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Home and Hospice Inpatient Center in Providence. She was the loving wife of William E. Schecher.

She was a daughter of the late James and Margaret (Daly) Sullivan. Mary was born on St. Patrick’s Day in March of 1928 in County Cork, Ireland. She emigrated to America in May of 1950. She was welcomed by her aunt, Nora Murphy, and her cousins Gerald and Teresa Murphy, Julia McManus and her husband, Austin, who took Mary into their home on Armstrong Avenue in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence. Mary and Julia were exceptionally close and remained as such until Julia’s death in November 2012.

Mary was formerly employed at the Shiboreen and Bantry hospitals in County Cork, Ireland before her emigration to America, where she found work as a housekeeper. She worked mostly on the East Side of Providence for the Chace family before spending her last six years of employment before marriage attending to the four priests in residence in the rectory of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pawtucket, where she was also married by Monsignor Cassidy in 1963. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Altar Society, and the Ireland 32 Society.

She is survived by her husband, William Schecher, her son Norbert and his wife, Ana, who provided tireless care and support for Mary, as well as grandchildren David, Briana, Vanessa and Cristina Schecher, and great-grandson Jayden McGovern, all of Smithfield and James Schecher and his wife Gina, of Franklin, MA, and grandson Timothy, son of James and Gina, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, James, John, and Timothy Sullivan, her sisters, Nora Daly and Peggy O’Sullivan.

The family would like to thank Michelle Corsi and her CNA’s, Home Health Aides, Linda Neves and Janice Mulholland, for their care. Additional thanks to Rev. George Nixon and Marcelle Boyes, who brought Holy Communion to Mary at home.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:30am from ANDERSON WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44, Greenville Common, Greenville, followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visiting hours are Monday 4-7 at the ANDERSON WINFIELD Funeral Home.
