Obituary

Charles Carr, or Chuck as he preferred to be called, was born on November 3, 1921 in Hobson, TX, to Elijah and Lillian Carr. To us he was simply Dad or Bumpa.
He was one of seven siblings and as a young man worked on the Civil Conservation Corp project. He tried to join the Army, but was too young, so instead signed up with the Navy (apparently they didn’t care he was under age at the time). He served in World War II and the Korean War and was honorably discharged at the rank of Quartermaster 2. While in the Navy he married Dorothea (Nicoli) Carr and they eventually settled in Somerville, MA and had five children – Deborah, Charles, Thomas, Thea Ann and Robert (deceased).
Dad worked as a door and window maker at Friend Lumber Corporation in Medford, MA for 25 years and often did side jobs at night and on weekends. Sometimes one or two of the kids would join him at night to “help” – he never complained, but I don’t think we helped as much as we thought.
Dad loved to drive, which is something he passed on to all of his children, but it became an issue later in life when we had to “take away his wheels”. During the summer he would pack up the family and we would go on a two-week driving vacation to various destinations throughout the US – the Grand Canyon, Texas, Virginia, Florida. He and Mom loved Florida so much that after retirement they eventually moved to Englewood, FL and remained there for 25 years, becoming “snowbirds” only returning to New England during the summer months.
Dad remained in FL, even after his wife of 69 years passed away in 2012, until his own ill health made a final move to New Hampshire necessary in 2014. He passed away on March 24, 2015.
If I could use only one word to describe Chuck Carr, it would be that he was a gentleman – in every sense of the word. Chuck, Dad, Bumpa – you will be missed - rest in peace.
