Ellen M. (Barstow) Barnes, age 95, formerly of Ivy Road, Mystic, died peacefully Tuesday evening at the Mary Lyons Nursing Home in Hampden, MA.
Mrs. Barnes was born September 9, 1909 the daughter of Lillian G. and Louis F. Barstow. A lifelong resident of Mystic she was a member of the Road Church in Stonington.
As a descendent of one of the oldest families of Mystic, she took great pride in her ancestry and genealogy. She was a member of the Indian & Colonial Research Center, the Society of Colonial Clergy, the Anna Warner Bailey Chapter of the D.A.R. and was a member of the Society of Descendants of Founders and Patriots of America.
She was married to Henry T. Barnes on December 26, 1934. Together, they enjoyed 59 years of marriage before Mr. Barnes' death on December 30, 1993.
Mrs. Barnes is survived by her daughter, Nancy B. Schechterle of Wilbraham, MA; a sister-in-law, Lucy H. Barnes; a special niece and caregiver, Sharon Helton, as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Norman F. and Charles T. Barstow.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at The Road Church, 888 Pequot Trail, Stonington, on Saturday at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Private burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
Donations in her memory may be made to the church. The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic is assisting the family.
