Obituary

Helen Hlinka Stockwell, 81, of Neptune Dr, Mumford Cove, Groton, died Friday, January 21st at Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center where she had been a patient since January 1st.

Born April 18, 1923 in New York City to Anna Petrik and Joseph Hlinka, she was the widow of Carl V. Stockwell Jr and was predeceased by brothers Joseph and John. She is survived by a brother, Michael Hlinka of Santa Barbara, Ca; a sister Margaret Gore of Live Oaks, Fla; sister in law Helen Hlinka of Danbridge, Tn. She is also survived by son David M Stockwell of Mystic;a stepson Carl Stockwell & wife Janet of Milford, stepson Peter Stockwell and wife Lynn of West Hartford, stepdaughter Sherrie Tudesco and husband James of Milford and 9 grandchildren.

In her business career she held a number of secretarial positions in New York City including the Commissioner of Public Events for NYC and was Executive secretary to Jack Dreyfus, president of Dreyfus & Co. She married and moved to Connecticut and was active in raising her family until the 1970’s. She returned to work 1970 in real estate. From 1975 until her retirement in 1986 was employed by the US Navy at the Submarine base in Groton. She initially worked for the Navy Exchange Officer and completed her work with the Navy Housing Department.

In retirement she was an active bridge player with Groton Senior Center bridge club, an avid gardener and member of the Trillium Garden Club of Groton. She was active in the Mumford Cove Association and for years she was a volunteer for Child and Family Agency of New London.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, on Monday from 4-6:45pm. A Service will follow at 7pm. Burial is private.
