TEWKSBURY: Francis "Frank" Canelas, age 87, a resident of Tewksbury for over 50 years, formerly of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Wilmington, MA, passed away at home, with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.
He was the beloved husband of Catherine G. (Perkins) Canelas, with whom he celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on November 27, 2014.
Born in Wilmington on June 20, 1927, he was the son of the late Ventura R. and Mary (Silva) Canelas.
Frank was raised in Wilmington and attended Wilmington schools.
In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Frank served during World War II and was awarded several decorations for his military service including the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal.
Prior to his retirement in 1997, he co-owned and operated the Canelas Disposal Company in Tewksbury for 40 years.
Frank was a former member and past president of the Tewksbury Rotary Club.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and traveling to Portugal with his wife.
In addition to his wife , he is survived by three sons, Frank Canelas and his wife Ruth of New Canaan, CT, Brian Canelas and his wife Laura of Ossipee, NH and David Canelas of Tewksbury; six grandchildren, Will, Sarah, Victoria, Julia, Brigitte, and Samuel; two brothers, Walter Canelas and his wife Ruth of Pelham, NH and Dennis Canelas and his wife Barbara of Rochester, NH; two sisters, Alice Motschman of Pelham, NH and Noreen Rowe and her husband Bob of Acton, MA; also many nieces and nephews.
Frank was the father of the late Kathleen Canelas and brother of the late Mary Correa and Thomas Canelas.
Calling hours are Monday, March 24, from 3-7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held Tuesday, March 24, at 10 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 198 Haggetts Pond Rd., Andover. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
