Obituary

Donald "Hank" Sylvia, 81 of New Bedford died January 19, 2005 at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a long illness.
He was the husband of Mary I. Sylvia with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Frank T. and Sarah E. (Hall) Sylvia, he lived New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Sylvia was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
He was formerly employed as a supervisor at Star Store in downtown New Bedford for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Sylvia served in the US Army during World War II and participated in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was the recipient of 2 Purple Hearts, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Fairhaven.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Donald Sylvia, and his wife Debbi, of Discovery Bay, CA and Alan Sylvia, and his wife Gina, of Dartmouth; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
