Charles B. Black, born January 23rd, 1921, died Sunday March 8th, 2015 at the UMass Medical Center, surrounded by his loving extended family. He was predeceased by the love of his life, June Pearl (Downer) Black in 1986. Born in Somerville MA, Bert lived most of his life in Worcester.
He served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater during WWII. Bert was among the first occupation troops to reach Nagasaki and Osaka Japan. He retired from WPI’s Alden Research Lab in 1986. Bert is survived by his sons, Richard W. Black and wife Jappie of Brockport, NY; and Dana Black and his wife Debra of Worcester. He also leaves 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Black of New Orleans, LA; and John Black and his wife Nicole of Worcester; Stacia Fjellman of Worcester; Seth Fjellman and his wife Vicky of Pawtucket RI; and Silas Fjellman of Worcester; 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was a kind and gentle soul who loved his family, his friends, his pets, his flowers and gardens, and of course, his Boston Red Sox. He will be missed by his many friends and family, and will live in our hearts forever.
Calling hours will be Thursday 3/12 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a service to follow immediately at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Worcester.
