Obituary

George Adams Smith, Jr., 71, of Waterbury and Lord’s Point, Stonington, died on January 18, 2005, in Colliverville, TN. He was the husband of the late Rosemary Verraster Smith of Waterbury.

Born January 7, 1934 in New London, CT, he was the son of the late Josephine Agnes (Mullen) and George Adams Smith. He graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport and from Yale University, class of 1955. He earned his degree in electrical engineering and resided at Silliman College while at Yale.

He was employed as plant engineer for the Allegheny Ludlum Corporation, formerly Wallingford Steel Company, throughout his entire career. He was known and respected throughout the steel industry and had several patents to his credit. He was responsible for building stainless steel mills in Waterbury, Claremore, OK, and oversaw the construction and commissioning of an entire plant in Shanghai, China.

He was involved in community activities in Wallingford, including the Rotary Club and the United Way. He was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Currently he is a member of the Rotary Club of Stonington and the Farms Country Club in Wallingford.

Mr. Smith traveled extensively throughout the world with his friend of many years, Elsa Bradford of Meriden. When not traveling, he would be found sailing Fisher’s Island Sound or at the beach with his grandchildren.

He is survived by three daughters in the Stonington area, Lisa Smith and Gus Craig with their children, Emily and Erin; Lori Smith and Dan Keogh with their daughter, Megan; Lynn and Jim Turner with their children, Colin and Hannah and his son; George Adams Smith, III, his wife Karen and their daughters, Alexandra, Kathryn and Isabella of Collierville, TN.

In addition to his wife Rosemary, he was predeceased by his daughter Mary Anne, sister Diane and her husband, Larry Ryan. He is survived by two sisters, Elaine Ariola of Southington and Kathleen Frageau of Waterbury and his brother Richard Smith of Springfield, VA and their families.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, on Sunday from 2-5pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM, Monday at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Rd, Groton, CT.
