Debbie (Arvanitis) Serfes, retired owner of Jay’s Deli, died Saturday at Glen Ridge Nursing Home. She was 84.
Mrs. Serfes was born and raised in Somerville, the daughter of the late Peter and the late Anthe (Drugas) Arvanitis, who came to the U.S. from Alatsata, Asia Minor. Debbie lived in Medford for over 41 years. For 35 years she owned and operated, with her late husband John, Jay’s Deli on Boston Ave., Medford. The restaurant is now operated by her sons. She was a member of the Italian American Club, Medford and the Philanthropic Society of Dormition Church in Somerville.
She was the beloved wife of the late John Serfes. She was a devoted mother of Arthur Serfes and his wife Carol and Perry Serfes all of Medford. She was a loving grandmother to Nicole, Alexander, Renee, Arthur II, Maryanne and Alyssa. She was a dear sister to James Arvanitis and his wife Kay of Medford, and John Arvanitis and his wife Dwyna of Wilmington. Debbie also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford, Tuesday at 10 AM followed by a Service in the Dormition Of The Virgin Mary, Greek Orthodox Church, 29 Central Street, Somerville, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4 - 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
