Obituary

Adalberth S. "Al" Rozario, 79, died April 4, 2002 unexpectedly at home.

He was the husband of Anna M. (Freitas) Rozario,and son of the late Sebastian and Maria (Reis) Rozario.

Mr. Rozario was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Fairhaven 30 years ago.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford.

Mr. Rozario was formerly employed as the director of the New Bedford Redevelopment Authority and later was the manager at the Car Barn Apartments for several years until his retirement. He later was employed as a bail commissioner.

Mr. Rozario served in the US Army during World War II, participating in the campaign of the Ryukyus in the Pacific. He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was a member and past president of the Cape Verdean Ultra Marine Band Club, a charter member of the Cape Verdean- American Veterans Association, a longtime member of the NAACP and a member of the Cape Verdean American Retirees Club.Mr. Rozario played basketball, football and baseball while at New Bedford Vocational School, was the captain of the football team and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. He later played semi-professional football with the Murphy Club, the Steamrollers and the Whalers.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Adalberth J. "Chuck" Rozario of Dartmouth; 3 daughters, Phyllis A. Rozario and Norma J. Belay, both of New Bedford, and Maria E. Rozario of Brighton, Colorado; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Clarice Soares, Walter Rozario, Joseph "Cab" Rozario, Manuel "Turtle" Rozario and Rose Ramos.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordMonday, April 8th at 10 AM.Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Sunday, April 7th from 4-8 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.
