Obituary

Albert Silva, 80, of New Bedford died Saturday January 8, 2005 at the Oaks Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret M. "Peggy" (Morris) Silva.

Born and raised in Fairhaven, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Campos) Silva, he had lived in New Bedford for many years. He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, Class of 1940, where he was a star football player.

He was a communicant of St. James Church.

Mr. Silva was formerly employed by the City of New Bedford Department of Public Works where he was a member of Local 851. He later joined the staff of AFSCME International Union working as a staff representative at Council 93. In 1998, he became the retirement coordinator where he organized AFSCME's Retiree Chapter.

Mr. Silva served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 and the Whaling City Golf Club, where he won many golf tournaments.

He loved cooking, golfing and card playing.

Survivors include two sisters, Sharon Lamy, and her husband James, of Fairhaven, and Alice Correia of New Bedford; a brother, Richard Silva of Nevada; a brother-in-law, John Morris of Dartmouth; a sister-in-law, Therese Galary of Fairhaven; his dear friend, Stephanie Murach of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.



He was the brother of the late Daniel Silva.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Wednesday January 12, 2005 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday January 11, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
