Obituary

William O. Simpson, Jr., 80, of Mattapoisett died Wednesday January 5, 2005 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Bertha T. (Southerland) Simpson.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, son of the late William O. and Evelyn (Ellis) Simpson, he had lived in Mattapoisett for most of his life.

Mr. Simpson was formerly employed as a police officer, constable, civil defense director, firefighter and member of the rescue squad for the Town of Mattapoisett for many years until his retirement.

Mr. Simpson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Union Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Nantucket, the Florence Eastman American Legion Post 280 in Mattapoisett, the Plymouth County Forest Fire Association, the Mattapoisett Historical Society and was president of the Ellis Cemetery in Mattapoisett.

Survivors include three sons, William O. Simpson III, Jamie E. Simpson, and Thomas J. Simpson, all of Mattapoisett; two daughters, Evelyn A. Ellis, and her husband Timothy, of Plantation, Florida, and Priscilla J. McDonald, and her husband Kenneth, of Braintree; a brother, Jarvis E. Simpson of Mattapoisett; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday January 12, 2005 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Road, Mattapoisett. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday January 11, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
