TEWKSBURY - Elizabeth M. (Bradfield) Hurley, who would have celebrated her centennial
birthday in November, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Tewksbury Hospital. She was the
wife of Michael J. Hurley, who died in 1989.
She was born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland, on Nov. 12, 1905. She came to Brighton, MA
in 1924 at the age of 19, to participate in her sister’s wedding. She remained in the U.S. and
settled in Brighton. Along with her husband, they owned and operated Mike’s Variety Store in
Charlestown, which was located at the corner of Russell and Walkers Streets.
After retirement, she relocated to Tewksbury 35 years ago, and had resided in the Carnation
Drive senior housing.
She was a devout Catholic, and was active at St. William’s Church in Tewksbury.
She also traveled to Ireland many times and remained in close contact with her extended family in
Ireland.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and her husband John Connolly of
Summersfield, Fla., formerly of Billerica, and Elizabeth Olsson of Nottingham, NH; four sons and
daughters-in-law, Michael F. and his wife Barbara (Harmon) Hurley of Billerica, Joseph M. and
his wife Virginia (Keane) Hurley of Tewksbury, John J. and his wife Patricia (Grant) Hurley of
Aurora, CO, William B. and his wife Elaine (Biucato) Hurley of Sarasota, Fla; 27 grandchildren,
many great and great great grandchildren, cousins, and nieces and nephews both in the U.S. and
Ireland.
She was also mother of the late George W. Hurley, and was the last surviving child of her family
of 9 sisters and brothers.
Her Funeral Mass was held Monday, Dec. 10, in St. William’s Church, Tewksbury. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Tewksbury Hospital "Patient Fund" c/o Administration, 365 East St. Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.
