Obituary

Captain Frank Shields, 73, of Acushnet died January 4, 2005 unexpectedly at home.
He was the husband of Mary Louise (Berube) Shields and the late Ida F. (Gasparelli) Shields.
Born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the son of the late William and Mary (Carbury) Shields, he had lived in New Bedford, Fairhaven and Acushnet for most of his life.
Mr. Shields was a commercial fisherman for over 50 years and had been a skipper and owner of F/V Angela W.
Mr. Shields served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Thomas E. Tuttle Post 7239 and American Legion Post 265 in Acushnet.
He enjoyed the company of his dog Star.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Donna Shields of Wareham; 4 stepsons, John Francis and Joseph Frates, both of New Bedford, Paul Francis of Acushnet, Leal Francis of North Port, Fla.; a brother, James Shields of Atlantic City; 4 sisters, Dorothy Meeks and Elizabeth Clayton, both of Maryland, Gertrude Long and Katherine Klontz both of Atlantic City, NJ; 2 grandchildren, Santos Ortega and Andres Ortega, both of New Bedford; 4 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren, including Chad Francis of Fairhaven.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Friday, January 7th from 6-9 PM.
